Summer Cocktail: Refreshing Aperol Tequila Spritz Recipe
As we step into the warmer months, there’s nothing quite like a refreshing drink. I’m a new fan of Aperol (I’ve never been to Italy so I’m blaming that!) BUT now that I’ve tasted an Aperol Tequila spritz, I’m here and I’m staying put!!! I keep a bottle of Aperol stocked in our home bar at all times now!
One of my besties Shelby of @theweb.effect, a badass, female-owned and operated social media marketing agency, has created the PERFECT summer drink: a Summer Aperol Tequila Spritz! Shelby is a master of creativity (as seen through her work on clients like La Vie Style House and Bungalow Paper and Design) and this fancy cocktail is just one of her works of art.
I’m thrilled to share with you the best Aperol tequila cocktail recipe that embodies the spirit of summer: the Aperol Tequila Spritz.
This cocktail is a fusion of Italian sophistication and Mexican flair, combining the iconic flavors of Aperol with the boldness of añejo tequila. It’s a balance of citrus notes with the bitter-sweet tang of Aperol and finished with a fizzy flourish of club soda.
What is an Italian Aperitif?

What is Aperol?
Aperol is a slightly bitter Italian liquor that pairs deliciously with spritzy beverages like club soda or champagne. It’s bright orange color makes it the perfect summery sip, not to mention it is incredibly refreshing!
This particular cocktail is special because of two additional flavors: grapefruit and tequila! Think of this Summer Aperol Tequila Spritz like the zesty baby of your classic Italian Aperol Spritz and a Mexican Paloma. Destination: YUM!
Other Aperol Cocktail Drink Recipes
Here are a few easy recipes to mix it up:
- Aperol Margarita Twist: Swap out the club soda for a splash of grapefruit soda to add a tropical tang to your Aperol Tequila Spritz.
- Rosa Tequila Spritz: Also known as a Rosa Glow Spritz, experiment with Rosa tequila for a vibrant pink hue and a subtle floral aroma. It’s a delightful twist on a classic cocktail that’s sure to impress.
- Mexican Spritz Sensation: For a true taste of Mexico, substitute Aperol with elderflower liqueur and add a splash of tonic water for a refreshing twist on the traditional Aperol Spritz.
An additional touch is a salted rim. You can also dip your glass in maple syrup and then salt for a unique sensory experience. The bitterness of Aperol perfectly complements the sweetness of maple syrup, creating a flavor profile that is both complex and satisfying.
Can you add grapefruit juice in an Italian aperitif?
Absolutely! While grapefruit juice isn’t a traditional ingredient in classic Italian aperitifs, it can certainly be incorporated to add a refreshing twist to your drink. Its tangy flavor pairs wonderfully with the bitterness of Aperol or Campari, creating a delightful balance of sweet and sour notes.
For example, you could try mixing Aperol with fresh grapefruit juice and a splash of soda water for a vibrant and zesty Aperol Grapefruit Spritz. Or, for a more adventurous take, experiment with grapefruit-infused vermouth in your Negroni for a citrusy kick.
So, while it may not be part of the traditional Italian aperitif lineup, grapefruit juice can certainly elevate your drink and add a unique twist to your pre-dinner ritual. Cheers to creativity in mixology!
Can you add lemon juice to an Italian aperitif?
Certainly! While lemon juice may not be as commonly used in traditional Italian aperitifs as other citrus fruits like orange, it can still be a fantastic addition to your drink. Lemon juice adds a bright and tangy flavor that can complement the bitterness of Aperol or Campari quite nicely.
For instance, you could mix Aperol with fresh lemon juice and a touch of simple syrup for a refreshing Aperol Lemon Spritz. The acidity of the lemon juice can help balance out the sweetness of the Aperol, creating a well-rounded and flavorful cocktail.
Whether you’re a seasoned cocktail enthusiast or just starting your journey into mixology, the Aperol Tequila Spritz promises a unique and unforgettable drinking experience. So, gather your ingredients, shake up a storm, and indulge in the rich flavors of summer. Cheers to good times and great cocktails!
